Potain MDT178 Climbing Cage

by: Steven Downes

Presented here is the 1:50th scale Potain MDT178 climbing cage accessory to fit the MDT178 tower crane. The cage is supplied in pieces and needs to be assembled.

The first stage is to connect the main cage frame to the MDT178 crane with the use of the supplies screws. This is made easy as the front of the cage has an opening door and once bolted to the MDT178 crane, the two piece lower platform can be fitted to the cage by pressing the lugs into the holes in the cage frame.

The main lift hydraulic has two flexible hoses which need connecting the the hydraulic tank. The next step is to fit the upper platform and access ladder. The walkways have etched mesh panels and realistically sized metal handrails while the ladder has a metal safety cage fitted.

The lifting mechanism is fully reproduced on the model and features a yoke bracket fitted to the hydraulic cylinder which connects to the hooks cast into the main mast sections which give the leverage to climb up the frame. The clamping mechanism is also functional, utilising a small spring and this mechanism would be used to hold the cage once the hydraulics have raised it up by connecting to the hooks on the mast sections.

The model is supplied with a different hook attachment and a frame lifting monorail trolley which allows the model to be posed with a new section of mast. This is an impressive addon for the MDT178 and gives the model a more detailed and impressive look.

  1. wonderful addition to the MDT 178

Posted by james flory on 6th Jan 2014

This cage is amazing. It is made completely of metal and the detail of the walkways and ladders and handrails is amazing. Very simple to put on and comes with a great instruction booklet. I recommend this addition to anyone buying the tower crane or anyone who owns one already. It is so nice I'm planning on purchasing every color combo crane/cage DCM offers. To bad i couldn't take advantage of the 3 pack bundle....anywho..thanks DCM for making my collection bigger..like Britt says...oh yeah...hi Britt :-)

A must have the crane is just incomplete without it. Excellent detail just like the crane.

  3. Very Good

Very nice addition to the original crane, I second what another reviewer said about epoxying the platforms as I had them fall off a couple times (as a result had to repair the handrails).

Pretty awesome, but I got it for free with the crane, I'm not sure I would pay $80 separately for it.

  4. A Must Have

Excellent detail. All metal. A definite must have for your tower crane.

  5. If you got the crane, you must get this!

Posted by Joe G. on 20th Sep 2012

Everything matches the crane, as said by the previous reviewer. Typical TWH has mesh walkways, ladders, motors and cabling and very fine handrails, all of them scale correct. If you're displaying the crane outside of a cabinet, make sure you use some kind of epoxy or something to strengthen the attachment of the platforms to the cage, because they use friction pins instead of screws as in the rest of the crane. The price reflects the level of detail...this is not a toy but another quality replica model from TWH.

  6. Excellent addition to the Tower Crane

This climbing cage makes for an excellent addition to the Potain Tower Crane. The level of detail matches the rest of the crane, so it fits right in, and adds to the overall look. I think it is a little expensive @ $79.95, but well worth it when on sale.
