Oshkosh Striker 3000 ARFF Truck
by: Steven Downes
Presented here is the 1:50th scale Oshkosh Striker 3000 ARFF
model which is based on the full sized vehicle in service at the
King Fahd International Airport in Saudi Arabia.
The snozzle turret is fully functional with the ability to both
raise up and extend with metal piping along the side of the
telescoping boom. The flexible hose is wound on a hose reel at the
base of the boom which can be rotated to keep the hose tight while
the tip of the boom houses the long spike and spray nozzle which
has flexible hoses connected.
The spray head can be rotated and positioned although the
flexible hoses prevent it from holding it's position due to their
stiffness. The rear of the model has a centrally mounted hinged
door panel which can be opened to reveal the engine detail inside.
The two side compartments at the rear of the model do not have the
ability to close due to model limitations and are glued in
The two central mounted amber beacons and the two long railing
sections are separate in the box and require fixing to the roof of
the model where photo etched metal plates with an intricate pattern
etched into them can be found along with the tops of two tanks,
complete with painted caps.
The deck access ladder can be folded down and the roof mounted
extension ladders can be removed from the model whilst the two side
panels at the rear of the model can be opened to reveal the engine
compartment, where the centrally mounted engine block is just about
The photo etched side cooling panels and roof mounted grill add
to the realism of the model and the large chrome exhaust stack is
fitted to the rear corner of the model. The central compartment
opens to reveal an array of switches and guages which are actually
printed with dials and this is an amazing level of realism on such
a small component.
Tiny safety and warning labels have also been printed on the
body above the compartment. The compartment behind the cab houses a
small hose reel with simulated hose and spray nozzle detailing and
the front mounted bumper turret can be lowered to allow a low
attack spray pattern to be adopted, just like on the full sized
