MB 4600 FMD HP3 Broom on Oshkosh H Series Chassis

by: Steven Downes

The H-Series model from TWH is available in three different configurations that demonstrate the versatility of the machine. Presented here is the MB4600 FMD-HP3 runway broom version and everything on this model has a quality feel with exquisite details not normally found on a 1:50th scale model.

The cab on the H-Series tractor has an amazing level of detail both inside and out with roof mounted beacon, grab rails on both sides of the cab frame and light modules which are provided in the box and need fitting to the cab frame. These are made of metal and have front work lights, indicator lights and rear view mirrors all integrated into them. Metal windscreen wipers are fitted to both the front and door windows with black painted simulated rubber window seals finishing off the outside of the cab.

The opening cab doors reveal a fully reproduced interior with grey painted door panels and interior decor with two air ride seats, complete with printed Oshkosh logos on the seat surface, which are actually tensioned with a little spring. The drivers seat has a fold down armrest with integral joystick controls while the central console has the steering wheel and foot controls all reproduced.

The substantial mid mounted engine is clearly visible inside the large housing with eight removable door panels supplied seperately in the box. The door panels fit into place snugly and have small plastic clips riveted to the inside of the panel to keep them in place on the model. The engine detailing is awesome with every component visible from the engine block, pipework, filters and electrical cables to the air intakes, exhaust and radiator cooling system mounted to the roof of the compartment.

The main engine is mounted at the rear of the chassis and is revealed by opening the rear engine cover which is spring loaded to keep it in the raised position. Once again, the engine has been fully reproduced with all the components clearly visible, including the cooling fan, radiator and rubber tubing. The exhaust stack has a photo etched mesh screen wrapped around it with molded exhaust cap.

The rear of the model has a photo etched grill with opening battery compartment revealing the four molded batteries while the rear bumper has a slot for the functional pintle hitch to be fitted. Large fuel tanks are connected to the chassis frame between the wheels with warning labels and flexible pipes all visible.

The MB4600 model has side mounted blower modules fitted to the chassis which have hydraulic cylinders connected allowing the unit to extend and lower into position and the mid mounted engine provides the power for the blower system. This is a nice addition to the model and the blower units are mounted just in front of the rear wheels, unlike the S3100 Sweepster version of the model where the blower units are mounted behind the front wheels.

Underneath the chassis, the complete drive train is visible from the rear engine through to the transfer box, where driveshafts connect to the front and rear axles. Both axles have working suspension and steering and the rubber tyres have a detailed tread pattern with rubber mud guards fitted to the front and rear wheel arches, complete with white printed Oshkosh logos.

The front broom attachment features a very realistic cylindrical broom with authentic synthetic bristles with hydraulic pipework from the pistons and rotational drive motor all present. The height adjustment is built into the attachment frame and the connection to the chassis is achieved by sliding the attachment into position. Left and right angle adjustment can be made with the swinging geometry with two castor style wheels providing stability for the broom attachment. The front panel on the cover can be angled upward and the top section of the broom housing can also be raised, revealing hydraulic pipework beneath while all warning and safety labels have been authentically added.

Acces to the cab is via the two ladders mounted behind the front wheels which have photo etched mesh steps. There is a mesh platform running down each side of the chassis with separate safety railings that need fitting into the holes.

The paint finish is excellent and the model is securely packaged in a two piece polystyrene carton with outer printed cardboard box. A small brocure is provided giving details of the MB4600 along with a full colour printed card detailing how to assemble the model and a plastic tool is provided to assist with assembly.

Yet another Oshkosh masterpiece from TWH! This model replicates the massive H-Series chassis with MB 4600-FMD-3 runway broom attachment. This is a museum-quality model with tons of working features.

The chassis has opening engine "doghouse" to display the beautiful CAT diesel, removable panels on the auxiliary engine "doghouse" to display that super-detailed CAT engine as well. Cab doors open showing a detailed cockpit including sprung seats w/Oshkosh logos on the headrest. All-Wheel-Steering is augmented by a fully sprung suspension. Photo-etch details abound including wipers, walkways, exhaust heatshield, and cab steps. Underbody is fully detailed with rotating driveshafts, visible fuel lines, air and fuel tanks, etc. All appropriate warning labels and manufacturer decals are replicated in legible, pad-printed form.

The broom includes real bristles, complete up/down/left/right articulation, and is removable from the chassis. Hydraulic lines are replicated, as is a functioning snow deflector.

Like other TWH products, the fit and finish are superb! This is a "must-have" for Oshkosh fans, airport snow clearance buffs, or afficianados of quality diecast.

Hey guys, Britt from diecastmodels.co. Today we have the MB 4600 FMD HP Broom, and the Sweepster S3100B Sweeper. They're on the OshKosh 8-series chassis. They're made by TWH in 1/50th scale. Let's take a look.

Here we have the MB 4600. There's the sweeper on the front, the yellow broom. There is a snow guard that pivots from being vertical to being horizontal. They are small hydraulic cylinders, the hydraulic cylinders are made of metal.

The broom pivots 35 degrees each way, so it has good movement on it. From the broom to the front of the chassis there are the hydraulic lines that would control all of the hydraulics on the real machine. The operator's cab features two side mirrors, a front windshield, and on the windshield there's a windshield wiper and two side doors. Both doors on the operator's cab open and reveal the detailed interior. There's the steering wheel and different levers and things to control the broom as well as the console and safety stickers.

There are full etched walkways along the entire body, and they're made of metal. There's also metal grab rails down the entire side. Directly behind the operator's cab there is the accurate air intake and the accurate engine cover, as well as a chrome muffler for the exhaust. The engine housing in the middle has panels that can be removed and reveal part of the detailed diesel engine. There's another engine housing in the rear that flips open and reveals more details and features different filters. pipes, and a cooing fan. On top of that engine housing there is the air intake and along the side there's a replicated exhaust pipe that has a photo etched heat shield around it.

Here's the Sweepster S3100B with the sweeper. It's the same body as the MB4600. The only different is the sweeper. The sweeper on this one's a little bit bigger. You can take off the snow guard and the snow guard also pivots from horizontal to vertical. This broom also has a 35 degree turning radius each way.

Once again we have the MB4600 FMD HP Broom and the Sweepster S3100B Sweeper. They're both on the OshKosh H-Series chassis and they're made by TWH in 1/50th scale. You can get yours today at www.diecastmodels.co. Thanks for tuning in, you'll see me next time.
