MB 4600 FMD HP3 Broom on Oshkosh H Series Chassis
by: Steven Downes
The H-Series model from TWH is available in three different
configurations that demonstrate the versatility of the machine.
Presented here is the MB4600 FMD-HP3 runway broom version and
everything on this model has a quality feel with exquisite details
not normally found on a 1:50th scale model.
The cab on the H-Series tractor has an amazing level of detail
both inside and out with roof mounted beacon, grab rails on both
sides of the cab frame and light modules which are provided in the
box and need fitting to the cab frame. These are made of metal and
have front work lights, indicator lights and rear view mirrors all
integrated into them. Metal windscreen wipers are fitted to both
the front and door windows with black painted simulated rubber
window seals finishing off the outside of the cab.
The opening cab doors reveal a fully reproduced interior with
grey painted door panels and interior decor with two air ride
seats, complete with printed Oshkosh logos on the seat surface,
which are actually tensioned with a little spring. The drivers seat
has a fold down armrest with integral joystick controls while the
central console has the steering wheel and foot controls all
The substantial mid mounted engine is clearly visible inside the
large housing with eight removable door panels supplied seperately
in the box. The door panels fit into place snugly and have small
plastic clips riveted to the inside of the panel to keep them in
place on the model. The engine detailing is awesome with every
component visible from the engine block, pipework, filters and
electrical cables to the air intakes, exhaust and radiator cooling
system mounted to the roof of the compartment.
The main engine is mounted at the rear of the chassis and is
revealed by opening the rear engine cover which is spring loaded to
keep it in the raised position. Once again, the engine has been
fully reproduced with all the components clearly visible, including
the cooling fan, radiator and rubber tubing. The exhaust stack has
a photo etched mesh screen wrapped around it with molded exhaust
The rear of the model has a photo etched grill with opening
battery compartment revealing the four molded batteries while the
rear bumper has a slot for the functional pintle hitch to be
fitted. Large fuel tanks are connected to the chassis frame between
the wheels with warning labels and flexible pipes all visible.
The MB4600 model has side mounted blower modules fitted to the
chassis which have hydraulic cylinders connected allowing the unit
to extend and lower into position and the mid mounted engine
provides the power for the blower system. This is a nice addition
to the model and the blower units are mounted just in front of the
rear wheels, unlike the S3100 Sweepster version of the model where
the blower units are mounted behind the front wheels.
Underneath the chassis, the complete drive train is visible from
the rear engine through to the transfer box, where driveshafts
connect to the front and rear axles. Both axles have working
suspension and steering and the rubber tyres have a detailed tread
pattern with rubber mud guards fitted to the front and rear wheel
arches, complete with white printed Oshkosh logos.
The front broom attachment features a very realistic cylindrical
broom with authentic synthetic bristles with hydraulic pipework
from the pistons and rotational drive motor all present. The height
adjustment is built into the attachment frame and the connection to
the chassis is achieved by sliding the attachment into position.
Left and right angle adjustment can be made with the swinging
geometry with two castor style wheels providing stability for the
broom attachment. The front panel on the cover can be angled upward
and the top section of the broom housing can also be raised,
revealing hydraulic pipework beneath while all warning and safety
labels have been authentically added.
Acces to the cab is via the two ladders mounted behind the front
wheels which have photo etched mesh steps. There is a mesh platform
running down each side of the chassis with separate safety railings
that need fitting into the holes.
The paint finish is excellent and the model is securely packaged
in a two piece polystyrene carton with outer printed cardboard box.
A small brocure is provided giving details of the MB4600 along with
a full colour printed card detailing how to assemble the model and
a plastic tool is provided to assist with assembly.
